MY LOST VOICE

I used to know you,

once,

before I had to

stop

and block my eyes

and close my mouth

tight

against the words

I need to give you.

Against all the questions

bursting

to be asked,

my need to know

if you know,

what to do

and how to live

and how to be

safe.

I have a road-map

in my glove-box

with all the pitfalls

marked,

all the pot-holes

glowing

in yellow marker,

and all the short-cuts

drawn.

But you wont take it,

oh no.

You know the road,

you know it all.

And never mind

that I just need

to know I made a difference,

to how long

the journey takes.

I need to know

I kept you safe.

I need to know

when I wave you off,

that there is no

high cliff

just over yonder rise,

that I can’t see,

no landslide

to drag you under.

But you won’t let me

speak.

You pull the shutters

down

when my mouth opens,

and now my voice

that once flowed

like rivers,

is dry and dusty

like a rusted

hinge.

I need to wait here

in this silence,

for the squeak

of a rusted gate

to tell of your return,

for your voice to say

you made it -

so my voice,

silenced,

may return.
