ALPINE FLOWERS

Sweeter are the Alpine flowers,

say the sheep,

that spend the winter under snow,

only pushing their petals

above the parapet

when the pale light of spring

shows its face.

Showy summer flowers

haven't had to struggle to survive

as these ones do,

they'd wither and wilt

with one bad day,

one shower of hailstones

battering on their heads.

Hardy flowers have an extra edge,

a firmness to munch on

in spring meadows,

an extra flavour

that speaks of all the days

they almost didn't last,

to bloom above the biting snow.
