ASK THE ANIMALS

If you're not sure

how well the Earth feels,

ask the animals.

Put your ear down in the dirt

and get the opinion

of the rabbits and the foxes

and the badger and the mouse.

If you wonder are the rivers clean

as they flow to the sea,

ask the fish and taste the seaweed

they nibble on, to stay alive.

If you wish to know what the soil

can grow, ask those who eat it first.

Listen up to what they say,

gauge the mood of the crowd.

We sit up here on human level

and totally forget to ask,

what's it like for those who

must survive below.

And if they can't survive

that should ring a warning bell

for all of man and all its kind.

So put yourself where they are

and really listen hard,

for the animals will tell us

if we want to know.

But what we hear we can't ignore.
