BIRD-MAN
The Bird-Man stood
with arms outstretched
in the village square,
while geese gathered
round his feet,
and birds filled the air.
Around his head
his feathered friends
circled in to land,
swooping down
from high above,
to settle on his cold, grey hands.
They loved the ancient body
of this man who never
spoke a word,
and they knew
beyond a doubt,
he couldn’t ever hurt a bird.
The perfect place to roost,
he posed no threat
to bird not beast,
the perfect friend
to all was he,
a statue rooted into place.
