BY THE RIVER

On a summer's day

with a blue sky

and a hot sun,

a sheep stopped at the river

to slake his thirst

and stayed to see

the river run,

and he followed its course

with his eyes

but his feet stayed on the bank

as he thought to himself

rivers run but sheep

stay in the field

where they belong,

it's just how it goes,

so he let the river flow

while he contentedly munched

on the succulent grass

sweetened by the water,

a stationary sheep

and a rushing river.
