THE DANCING GIRLS
The dancing girls
kick up their heels
to an invisible tune,
in the grass
of a summer meadow
while the sun shines down.
They dance just for joy,
carefree, and sure.
Their young feet rise
the dust from the ground,
to swirl in the sun’s rays,
and settle soft, like feathers.
The music they follow
is only heard
by the very young,
and the unselfconscious.
It plays inside their own heads,
a rhythm born of loving life.
Soon they will tire
under the noon-day sun,
and collapse on the warm ground
in a giggling heap of girls,
feeling the sweet freedom
of summer days, with friends.
