ONE MAN
AND HIS DUCKS
One man sat,
with ducks at his feet,
and yellow beaks
leaning in
to offer quacks
of comfort.
Not the same
language
as his,
but still, a connection.
One man, who
had found himself
separated
from humanity,
found himself
tethered
to the earth
by feathers and bills,
and the warm breasts
of his ducks.
One man said,
to himself,
never again will I
underestimate
the power of any
creature,
who rallies round,
to heal
a wounded heart,
to fill an empty space.
One man sat,
in wordless harmony
with the ducks
at his feet,
long after
he needed their
feathered comfort,
in the hope
that he could give
a little, back.
