RESCUE

I rescued you

many years ago

on a cold December morning

from the ditch they left you in

to freeze alone.

Only a pup,

a small yellow ball of fluff

not old enough

to be out on your own,

never mind forever.

You came to us

and you entered our home

and just as quickly

you entered our hearts

and settled in.

And then you rescued me.

Every day that was hard

you were on my heels,

my little golden shadow

always there.

My mute friend

who speaks with his eyes

and reads every thought

before I even make it,

walkies, treats, pets.

A constant companion

who greets me

with unbridled affection

and unconditional love

the minute he sees me.

Who couldn't but love that

level of total devotion

that wipes out any bad mood,

and I wonder -

who rescued who?
