THE AUNTIES
The Aunties
keep sweeties
in the bottom
of their handbags,
and hankies
in their cardigan sleeves.
They may look frail,
but they’re
sharp as nails,
they mutter
and gossip
and moan.
The Aunties
knit jumpers,
say the Rosary
at funerals,
and always know
a cure for the flu.
They’re the
sweetest old ladies,
who bet
on the races,
and drink dry sherry
at noon.
