THE CRACKED POT
She clutched a cracked pot
tight to her chest,
the crack a jagged scar
that almost lived and breathed.
Dropped from a great height
by unfeeling fingers
a long time ago,
the crack became a thing of beauty.
A scar sent by survival,
a cut to show the world it did not break,
nor shatter into a thousand
useless pieces on the floor,
but held itself together, somehow,
joined only by dust and grit and luck.
She keeps it in pride of place,
on a specially constructed shelf
where she can see the beauty
of its imperfections,
and feel the roughness of its mended skin,
her worn and precious pot.
