THE FIRST STEP
I stood at the road,
and contemplated the mountain in the distance.
I almost turned tail and ran for home,
for my old life and my comfortable choices.
It's too high, and far away,
the task too big, the risk too great.
What if I failed? What if I slid,
all the way down, what if I hurt my limbs, my pride?
I said to myself, just one step.
One foot up, and one foot down.
If I fall I'll cry, but rise again.
And if I fail, I will at least have tried, to change.
