THE GIFT

She hands him a gift,

and it not even Christmas.

A bound book,

as precious as gold bars.

Contained within,

the secrets of the universe,

the tales of love and wars,

the skills for survival,

and all the world’s knowledge

that some seek

for a lifetime.

His for the taking.

The only effort asked,

to learn to read,

to decipher the code

that unlocks all the mysteries.

And then, to turn a page,

and another,

to suspend time, and place,

and be lost in a good book.
