THE STRAWBERRY

He grew himself a strawberry,

lush and red and round,

and he gazed at it in wonder

as he held it in his hand.

A little seed, a little plant,

and a little bit of care,

until one day he checked again

and a strawberry was there.

He let it grow and turn to red

while fending off the slugs,

who tried to steal his precious prize

from right under his nose.

One day he saw that it was big

enough to eat, so he popped it

in his mouth and bit…. oh, the juicy

flavour that exploded out from it!

He'd never tasted anything

like this one in a shop –

I like this gardening lark he said,

and I don't think that I'll stop.
