THE WHITE RABBIT

I was scrolling through Instagram,

and I saw a girl doing magic tricks.

She took off her tall hat, and waved it about,

and mumbled magic words.

And then - pouff - a white rabbit appeared.

It was a lovely wee fluffy thing

not much bigger than her hand,

with its ears pricked up with the shock

of appearing in a hat.

Or so it seemed.

Then I thought about a magic trick,

and sure the clue is in the word, trick.

It's smoke and mirrors and deflection,

and we don't question what we see.

A bit like Instagram, really.

We see a version of reality on screen,

a shiny magic perfect version that should

be taken with a whole spoonful of salt,

and a healthy dose of scepticism.

Like magic rabbits appearing in hats.
