A HOUSE IN THE DESERT

There was once a house up in the  hills,

with a river running by,

and in it lived a girl who loved

to live alone and way up high.

She didn't pine for other people

and was happy living there,

she always felt much more alive

in the desert's dry and arid air.

She had all she could need,

the river gave her water,

and the fish she ate were gifts

that the river brought her.

In years gone by she would have been

called a dangerous witch,

a woman who could build her house

and was quite content to live in it.

A woman who didn't feel the need

to live down with the others,

who didn't need the help

that the other people offered.

Someone who doesn't follow rules

is seen as someone dangerous,

but some folk only breathe

when they're far away from strangers.
