CHEWING THE CUD

How now ladies, says the farmer

as he leans back against the stone wall

and rests his elbows on the top,

all the better to speak.

The cows, being cows, don't reply

but they do listen,

and blink their long black eyelashes

and push their foreheads closer

to be scratched, which in cow terms

constitutes a conversation.

He enjoys their daily chats

as he goes around the farm,

pausing to pontificate on several topics

to cows who couldn't care less

but enjoy the sound of his voice.

As does he, in fairness.

He loves having a captive audience

for everything he wants to say,

he can throw politics and opinions

and one sided debate over the wall

safe in the knowledge that the cows

won't ever argue back,

or call him on his tall tales,

they'll just listen long enough

to satisfy them both,

before they wander off to chew the cud.
