JUST A THOUGHT

I had a thought,

and once I had that awful thought

it coalesced into a cold hard marble

that rattled around my head,

rolling into every corner

and infecting every day

with its negativity and fear.

Then a wise woman said,

it's just a thought, don't give it

the power of permanent residence,

let it float on by.

Let it drift like a bubble to the sky

where it will grow and grow

and burst eventually,

and disperse its energy to the ether

and not inside your mind.

I've learned, now, to watch

my thoughts from the outside,

to follow dispassionately

their onward progress

from inception to implosion,

but without the self-destruction,

that one small act

of self-preservation

keeping me sane.
