THE RED-HAIRED GIRL
I met a young girl
with flame-red hair,
that danced in the wind
like a bonfire around her head,
and I thought, oh oh,
this one must have a temper,
or so they always say.
I bet she gets cross at the drop
of a hat, agitated by anything,
cantankerous with everyone,
quick to react.
Then, we got to chat,
and I discovered that she didn't have
a single temperous bone in her body,
or an inflamed thought in her head.
She was the calmest, coolest girl
I'd ever met.
She stayed serene
in the face of provocation, she said,
and didn't rise to anger
but smiled at anyone who tried to rile her,
life's too short for that, she said.
Well that was me set straight.
Miss judgemental, and assumptive,
embracing clichés like they were gospel,
how wrong I was.
I parted company with the girl
with flame-red hair,
and went on my way,
dragging the weight of all my
pre-conceived notions
behind me like a chain.
