and feed its soil

and prune its dead leaves.

in summer meadows

surviving the discontent of winter

and the new growth of spring

all by itself.

It must be nurtured and fed

and coaxed back to life

after each killing frost,

its blooms protected

by gentle words and deeds,

its fragile seeds cultivated

by kindness and patience and trust.
