THE RISING RIVER

There's a river flows through town,

running like wild horses past the pretty houses

with their balustrades and attic conversions

and sun rooms with river views.

The river doesn't care,

about chimneypots and mullioned windows

and how much it cost to keep the original features,

it just wants to escape and get back to the sea.

Rain falls, and the river swells like an over-fed monster

and pushes its way in a forward direction

with the arrogance of ownership,

just like the people who built in its way.

But the river was there first.

And the river will flow no matter what,

as it did before buildings were put on its banks

and windows positioned to take in its charms.

The people in the houses look out at the river

and all they see is real estate heaven,

while the river laughs to itself with the knowledge

that it will last longer, than all of their bricks and mortar.
