SHEEP COMING ROUND

THE MOUNTAIN

A sheep was coming

round the mountain

as I drove the little road

through the bog,

I nearly ran him over

as he stood along the verge,

as contented as could be,

and no thought of cars

or the safety of sheep.

Then again it was

his back garden, all of it,

the bog and the mountain

and even the road,

sheep have no distinction

unless someone builds a fence,

and away up here,

that hadn't happened.

So I apologised to the sheep

for nearly running him over

in his own home,

and I drove on but slower,

mindful of a sheep

around every sharp bend

and hidden corner.
