SILVER SPOON

I couldn't find the silver spoon,

that they all said I had,

I couldn't see it anywhere

and I really did look.

I looked in every room

in my lovely warm home,

I looked in vain in the garden

and behind the outdoor furniture.

I would have asked my family

and all my lovely friends

but I didn't want them to think

I'd misplaced something so precious.

Everywhere I went I kept my eyes peeled,

searching shops and restaurants

and the library and the theatre

and the parks and the bank.

I even searched the aeroplane

on the way to my holidays

and the hotel and the beach

and the pristine ocean.

I wondered where it could be,

as I ate food in abundance

and drank my clear water

straight from the tap.

I was glad I was so healthy

that I could bend and stretch to search,

all my ten fingers ransacked shelves

while I stood on my two strong legs.

I had lots of time to look,

not being otherwise occupied

with famine or war or natural disasters.

But still, no luck, not a silver spoon in sight.

Now I think that everyone who said

I had it all, really didn't know

what they were talking about.

I'm just an average girl, not privileged at all.
