STANDING STILL

I stood still so long

that the grass grew under my feet

and the flowers grew up my static ankles

and merged me with the ground,

until one day I couldn't move at all.

I had become stuck in my own rut,

mired in the mud of indecision

permanently poised for procrastination

leaving every opportunity

for tomorrow, or someday.

I should have jumped

while I had the chance,

before I felt the fear of falling,

before the risk of failure reared its ugly head

and scuppered all my deep ambition.

It's not too late to move,

I tell myself, as I wiggle one foot

over and back in preparation,

maybe if I re-adjust my expectation

and forget the pressure of achieving,

if I walk in smaller steps instead of running,

perhaps I can still break free.

And at least I will be doing something

which is infinitely better,

than standing still and doing nothing.
