THE DAWN GREETER

Sunlight's fingers kiss the ridge

and slide down, almost

to the darker corners

where the deer waits,

seeking daylight's signal

that the day's begun.

All the creatures of the forest wake

and listen, in the dawn's hush

for signs it's safe to stir,

the undergrowth rustles

with a hundred tiny bodies,

overseen by the deer above.

It turns, only when the full sun

stretches down to the shadows

and meets the trees below,

and trots off to graze the meadows

with the warm sun on its back,

another dawn welcomed in.

The creatures of the forest know

that the sun must be greeted

like a long lost friend

and thanked for its daily rising,

for without it there would be no life,

on the land below.
