OVER THE HILL
The road runs past my house
and over the hill and around the bend
and beyond the crest and leaves me
and the sheep behind.
Some days we mind,
and other days we take a mad notion
to see where it goes, one foot
in front of the other and never stop,
a new view at every turn,
a new dawn for every day.
At least that's me, my wandering soul
wondering where the road goes
and if I can go too,
despite wanting to be right where I am
at this moment in time,
calm and content in my home.
What is it with a bend, a rise, a turn
that we need to look around it and past it
to see what is in store
and what might be ahead?
The sheep, I think, only wander in search
of grass, of more fragrant flowers
than what they have here,
seeking pastures new for food
and not to satisfy their curious minds.
So I'll not ask them when they pass
my door if they roam for adventure,
or to seek information
about what's over there hidden,
I think I'd rather pretend
that me and the sheep are in this together.
